CONVERSION
Digitally-Altered Analog Photography
Conversion (2022) explores scenes of disgust and uncanniness in which objects that are familiar are put in places where they become repulsive. These images form a metaphor for the ways in which queerness can change how one is seen by others. A queer person is familiar until they come out, at which point they can be seen as disgusting or sinful. This series is both a criticism of this “conversion” of viewpoint as well as an acceptance or admiration of the state of being “disgusting.” Each image contains subtle injections of Catholic imagery into the background to invite critical thinking about and personal interpretations of the juxtaposition between disgust and religiosity.
